Came here for TWR prefixe brunch meal for my boyfriends bday brunch and it was quite a steal! 35$ for a brunch entree and 5 brunch cocktails. We were allowed to choose from bloody Mary’s, bloody Maria’s, mimosas, Bellinis and screwdrivers. 5 seemed like a lot for me, but the drinks weren’t very strong compared to previous bottomless places I have been which to me was a slight disappointment. We are very big Bloody Mary fans so we stuck with bloody Mary’s the entire time. Except after the fourth we were pretty over the flavor. Our waiter let us know we could choose from beer, wine, or a greyhound if we weren’t feeling anything from the selected cocktail menus. My boyfriend got a beer and I had a greyhound. They were both great and satisfying.

We were seated in the back area which was very romantic, dark and quiet. It was a nice area for dinner but we wanted to be a little bit more in the action. During our last drink after we signed the bill, we took our drinks to the bar which was a little more lively for a Saturday afternoon.

The food was average brunch food. I had the salmon eggs Benedict and my boyfriend had the standard which was eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes. We both loved our meals! They also came out within 5 minutes of us ordering. It was extremely fast! Almost too fast! But we never felt rushed. We took our time eating and drinking and ended up sitting at our table for almost over two hours. Since it was my boyfriends bday I asked the waiter to bring out a birthday surprise dessert. He offered cheesecake, brownie or creme brûlée and I decided on the cheesecake. It was a lovely surprise and tasted good! We were charged extra but I had expected it.

Overall we loved our waiter and the service. The atmosphere could have been a little livelier but that is to be expected when brunching on the upper east side. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend and I hope to try it out for dinner!

Same owners as the former Parlor Steakhouse, and they have some of that menu transferred over.

Great drinks (I had the “Urge to Smoke” and enjoyed it.) Ambiance is cool. They did a good job with the wall color and interior decor choices. Really nice wood tables too.

The food was very middle of the road. I got the fried chicken, which was okay but came with a terminally dry block of cornbread. The coleslaw it came with was surprisingly good though with a mid level kick of jalapeño. I didn’t enjoy the sauce it came with at all (some sort of Carolina-style spicy bbq thing.)

My dining companions got the Chicken Parmesan and Bistro Filet. The parm looked good, but seemed lacking in robustness since that diner was still hungry afterward. The filet was good quality and cooked correctly, but didn’t come with the sauces listed on the menu.

Overall, like the Parlor was, it’s overpriced for what is delivered. When you buy a $30-40 steak entree, you expect some sauces. Take notes from T-Bar.

My husband and I came here for brunch on Saturday morning, around 11:30 am. There was no wait and we got to sit outside on the patio which was nice.

I ordered the brunch prefix which was $35 that included an entree and up to five cocktails. I got the salmon Benedict which was very good. I had two mimosas and one Bellini which left me with a pretty bad headache most of the day.

My husband ordered coffee, which he said was very good. To eat, he ordered the steak and eggs. The steak looked really good but it was a very small portion, so my husband was a bit disappointed.

Love this place! A really cool, neighborhood restaurant with a writing/ books theme. If you can, sit in the back room, which is decorated like a cool reading nook in a library. You get to walk there through the old car catalog decorated hallway, as a bonus. Everything my friends and I had here was awesome. From the two eggs with bacon and sausage plate, to the omelette, to the breakfast sandwich, to the eggs Benedict were great. As was the coffee and the champagne! We were her on a Sunday, and it was a bit crowded. But we just called ahead, and got in pretty quickly. Our friends live in the area, so the next time we visit, we will be sure to come here again!

We really enjoyed our dinner here. We tried the salmon tartare (with soy and wasabi) and tri-color salad for appetizers (both very nice and the salad was well-seasoned) and the spaghetti meatballs. For mains we had the scallops, steak special of the night and lobster roll. Save room for dessert – they have a great cheesecake!

The steak and eggs for brunch are great, so is the salmon. Excellent coffee as well. Nice interior.

Came here for dessert and wish we had gotten a full meal! The food is beautifully served and tasted great. We ordered creme brûlée, an ice wine, and the brownie with ice cream. I personally enjoy the brûlée top layer of the dessert and wished the layer was thicker and the creme in a shallower dish. However, the brownie was so yummy. Pretty sure it was all butter and dark chocolate which was the best! Can’t wait to return for their brunch menu as it looks good!

Overall. This is an excellent upper east side brunch spot or dinner spot. It’s family friendly but in a trendy atmosphere.

Pros: the back library room is the coziest area of the restaurant. A little hallway with library catalog drawers separate the dining room from it. I believe the back room can be reserved for private events or requested for dinner. Since it’s separated from the main dining room it is often where families with small children are seated for brunch.

The food is great, although if you want the fried chicken for brunch it’s not the same quality as Boulevard Bistro or Red Rooster, so don’t get your hopes up.

The bread basket (it’s an up charge) is actually a plate with a variety of good breads.

Cons: $15 kids pasta meal. Really?

They no longer have the “good” free bread.

They wouldn’t allow a requested substitution on an omelet.

The food here is very good. No one went to Elaine’s for the food.

The Writing Room’s menu changes some. I hadn’t been since 2016 brunch and was there last night pre-92Y lecture and ordered the Cobb for the first time.

One of best Cobb salads I’ve had in my life. Friend was late and ordered one with chicken (I just ordered the regular one). If you add protein it’s 10 bucks more but there was enough chicken to feed two and it was delicious. Mesquite, tender, excellent.

Instead of a hardboiled egg, they top the salad with a deviled egg! I would never have thought to do that but it was sublime. I wonder if you can ask for two.

Service was terrible until the hostess got involved. She ended up taking our order and acting as our server. The bartender could not be bothered even to bring me a menu. I sat for five minutes after I retrieved one myself and even then, he barely paid attention to us. I had to get the check from the hostess who performed three functions: host, manager, server.

My theory of salad: the more it costs, the more lightly it’s dressed. The dressing was perfect but quite light There was none in the bottom of the bowl when I finished.

They have new bread since I’ve been: a sort of artisan wheat/sourdough hybrid.

I think you have to buy a side of those decadent rolls now.

The specialty cocktails run 13-15 but I was surprised any were just 13, which is on the low end for the city these days.

I had “One for the People,” a not-too-sweet vodka/prosecco cocktail with muddle raspberry, lime, and simple syrup (just a touch).

Generous pour on the cab (surely due to hostess who knew we were not happy at the beginning of the evening).

A friend who lives a few blocks from WR (and longtime Elaine’s patron) called the service “dodgy.” That’s about right.

They have happy hour until 6:30 and the brunch is quite good. I like the decor and the music is just right: not obtrusive but puts you in good mood.

I love everything about this place EXCEPT THE SLOW SERVICE. It’s basically set up like a coffee shop (90% of people sit alone with laptops open) but they serve a great, full menu and stock a full bar. Except I’m sitting there right now, I’ve checked with the hostess once already, and I still haven’t been visited by a server in the 20 minutes since I got here. And it’s like this pretty much every time.

This was the first time trying this restaurant and definitely the last. We originally went because they were participating in restaurant week. After looking at the prefix menu, we decided to just order from their regular menu. The calamari appetizer was a very small portion and completely over done. My “cavatelli” wasn’t cavatelli at all. It tasted like boxed pasta shells. The sausage in my dish was very dry and tasteless. There was nothing good about what I ordered. I was starving and I couldn’t even eat it because of how over salted the sauce was. I’m only giving two stars because my boyfriend enjoyed his chicken parm and his brother liked his burger. Based on the reviews, this restaurant seemed great so I was highly disappointed. There are many options in the area that are much better and less expensive. Go elsewhere!

Randomly stumbled into this restaurant, looking for a quick brunch spot. I’m definitely coming back! $35 prix fix brunch includes 1 entree and up to 5 drinks! I had the fish and chips and it was amazing!!! The drinks are really good too, I couldn’t even get to 5! There’s no wait time and they have outdoor seating. Perfect Sunday brunch!

3.5 stars. In a conversation with my dining companion, we mentioned how the ambience is “hipster chic, but trying too hard.” Especially for the area , it seemed a bit out of place, like it was trying to exude the sense of regaled legendary yore of yesteryear. In either case, the seating was extremely comfortable. Books everywhere.

My watermelon basil gazpacho was delicious- the slight chili opposition brought out the sweetness of the watermelon. My friend’s ribs were hands down to die for.
The rotisserie chicken was simple and flavorful- in a way I’m glad I had it brought to me straight on the pan bc the jus made the veggies much more flavorful.
My cheesecake had a nice contrast with the salt flakes , but the scoop of fruity gelato was too tangy in comparison.

Since it was restaurant week, it was a good experience , but I wouldn’t come back to spend more money on any of the dishes.

Wonderful restaurant with a dimly lit back room with a fireplace great for a date. On a weekend, front area was lively and more crowded while the back room was more private and less crowded.

Ambiance. Love the bookshelves lining the walls. Warm and comfortable.

Service. Attentive and friendly.

Food and drinks. Mezcal old fashioned was well made. We enjoyed everything we ordered to eat: Tuna tar tar was wonderful, steak was tender and well flavored, bronzino was fantastic.

Definitely recommend.

We got

Cheese and charcuterie-we got the market price one- the chef picks for you. It’s so “grate-“def the “feta” choice.

Lobster risotto – this risotto is so good. I’ve finally found my lobster.

Long Island duck -this was the major part of the “bill,” but it’s def worth it. Get this

The service is amazing! They def know how to do it “write.” Made me want to be “pen” pals with the waiter. Also gave me free dessert for my birthday! It seems like a lot of people are complaining about the wait. I didn’t have a problem with this at all. Everyone around us didn’t have a problem either and they were packed-my water was still always filled before it got close to being empty and my drinks were coming out very quickly. I think I’ve made my “point-” come here, you won’t regret it.

Awful service, overcooked food — this place is all hype. The waitress forgot the appetizers and the scallops were rubbery. Just poor quality food and overall service. Would not recommend or go back.

Decided to go to the Writing Room on a Monday evening and it was overall a good experience. We had a reservation, but came earlier and were seated earlier which was nice. Hostess asked to check our coats and was polite.

Sitting down, our server came right over and was polite as well. She told us the happy hour for half priced bottles of wine, which we were thankful she mentioned! She offered good recommendations off of the menu and spent time with us picking out a wine, so great to start off.

We ordered the Parker House rolls (which were fire!), tuna tartar, and the buccatini carbonara pasta. Parker house rolls were really delicious – the order came with 4, but we could only have one each they were very rich. The tuna tartar was decent, nothing too special though. It was just your average tartar with Asian seasoning. The buccatini was delicious, and came with a poached egg to break over top for yolk. Made it extra rich and delicious.

Throughout the course of the meal, the service declined. It wasn’t bad by any means, but definitely slowed down and wasn’t as attentive as it was in the beginning. Our server was kind of MIA and we had bus boys asking if we wanted things wrapped or if we were done when we were clearly still eating.

Once the check came, we noticed after (our fault for not checking the check) that they didn’t include the happy hour price for the wine, so we paid for the full bottle when it was supposed to be half off. We then made note of it to the server and she was able to fix it, but I am still waiting for the charge to be changed on my account.

However, minus the few hiccups, good experience.

Quite possibly one of the best restaurants in Yorkville (UES). The staff is friendly and always on their toes, the chef is brilliant and the food is nothing less then fantastic. Each time I go I have a great time and know it’s a restaurant that I can send clients and friends too. Make sure you check out the bar scene on the weekends too!

Very cozy brunch spot!

Housed in the old Elaine’s space, The Writing Room is a cozy, elegant, kid friendly restaurant. I especially love the dark wood and the thick velvet chairs.

The service is friendly and reasonably fast. We had:

– Huevos Rancheros – good but with a kick.

– Avocado Toast with Poached Egg – good with an unexpected kick

– Chicken Fingers – tasty

All in all, this was a nice meal. Most of the food we ordered was a bit on the spicy side, so be mindful.

Great place been here twice and a big fan on both occasions. Great brunch and on point service. We are fans.

    High 4 stars!

The proof: I ate here two nights in a row.

There is nothing I don’t love about this place, a nostalgia trip for me less because of Elaine’s–where I ate only once–but because I lived in the Leighton House on weekends for a year in college (1992-193), the fancy high-rise a block away on 1st, because my dorm was a closet and Dad’s colleague let me stay in large duplex to write papers in peace and take a break from 4th floor walkup single.

    1. Service: Outstanding and friendly. I’d be a regular if I lived in the 80s rather than the low 60s when in the city, and even still, I plan to hit the Writing Room for the Farmers Salad (13) once more before I leave for So Cal on the 19th of December.

Nancy was my server the second night. She’s from Milton, MA, the same town as my family friend with whom I stayed in the early 1990s and in whose 4th floor walkup rental I now live 3 months a year. She is excellent and fun to talk to (Milton MA is upscale Boston enclave, mostly Catholic, so she knew all the Catholic schools my friend attended). The hosts and hostesses are all friendly, as is the bartender.

    2. Great decor: Cozy but elegant. I wanted to eat in the main room the first night but didn’t have a reservation. They host suggested a corner table in the bar by the window with comfy high chairs and that worked just fine.

    3. Farmer’s salad: 13 and heaven. I’m not usually a fan of hearts of palms but they don’t dominate the dish and with all the other stuff going on, it’s a nice complement. I loved the Green Goddess, which I don’t see a lot in restaurants much these days but loved as a child.

    4. Riccotta with chili and mint: perfection. I’ve had it twice. Once the toast was burnt but I didn’t care because the bread they give you to start is doughy, hot yumminess with butter. I’d rather just eat the cheese straight and enjoy the decadent, addictive bread they bring when you sit down.

    5. The specialty cocktails: Yummy but too small (too much ice). I tried the Book End and the Russian Maid. They were good but small for the money, which is my objection generally to specialty cocktails. Still, unlike most specialty cocktails I try beyond the classics, I enjoyed both. Ketel One Martini with twist was strong, big and excellent.

    6. I tried a red wine I want to find by the bottle but I lost the piece of paper, which is another good reason to pay the Writing Room a visit before I head back to LA for Christmas holiday.

Specialties

The Writing Room is a neighborhood restaurant, bar, and lounge boasting American cuisine on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Housed in the space that was formerly Elaine’s, we take diners back to a simpler time while paying homage to the literary following the place inspired. Our menu features fresh, local ingredients in every dish, from the homemade gnocchi to the baked clams, rotisserie chicken, eggplant Parmesan, and New York strip loin. The Writing Room is about fun, entertainment, farm-to-table cuisine, cultivated cocktails, and a wine list that focuses on grape variety education. We are casual fine dining, letting hospitality shine through in every step of service.

History

Established in 2013.

Fifty years since the original Elaine’s opened to droves of celebrities, screenwriters, New York notables, and locals alike, Upper East Side restaurateurs Michael & Susy Glick have ushered in a new wave for this booming neighborhood with the opening of The Writing Room in 2013. The design concept of The Writing Room includes an open kitchen flecked with subway tiles in the bar room. The Glicks used raw materials to evoke both a vintage and literary feel. The main dining room features reclaimed wood floors, rich leather banquettes accented by custom-made pendant lighting, and textured red brick walls. Continuing the literary theme throughout the design, the front walls feature an array of photography inspired by famous authors, libraries, and writers.

Business Owner

The Writing Room is the newest venture for the restaurateur couple Michael & Susy Glick, who also own Parlor Steak & Fish. Having planted their feet in this ever-evolving neighborhood more than five years ago, the Glicks were drawn to the property when it shuttered in 2011. After some careful consideration, they chose to embrace the challenge of delivering a formidable new American staple to this wanting neighborhood, while still paying homage to its iconic history.
